Cape Town - Supporters of the ruling party on Thursday expressed concern that clashes would break out during the evening’s State of the Nation Address (Sona).

“I am very worried about the violence,” said Kholwyani Guga.

“The EFF and the DA don’t want President Zuma to speak today but we must make sure he does.”

Guga said by calling for Zuma to “go down”, a threat of violence had been made.

Guga said the violence was almost inevitable as tensions were high and each supporter had the interests of their party to protect.

However, instead of blaming other parties, Guga called on Zuma to answer questions truthfully about Nkandla and former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene.

“Just be honest and give them the answers they want,” he pleaded.

Meanwhile, fellow African National Congress supporters and Ses’Khona People’s Rights Movement continued to gather, sing and dance at their traditional meeting spot, Keizergracht.

This while police in their nyalas, equipped with barbed wire, looked on.

The President’s address is scheduled to begin at 7pm.
