Radio remains a vibrant industry in SA | News Article

Johannesburg - Radio has remained a vibrant industry in South Africa over the years.

This is according to the Department of Communications’ spokesperson, Mish Molakeng, in commemoration of World Radio Day, celebrated today.

13 February is a date proclaimed by UNESCO to, amongst others, celebrate radio broadcast and encourage decision makers to create and provide access to information through radio.

Molakeng explained that today (Saturday) marked a very significant day for radio not just in the country but also on a global spectrum. He added the medium remained one of the most cherished and a global symbol of communication and human progress.

Molakeng emphasized that radio is still one of the most effective mediums although it has faced tough times and challenging competition.

“Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi, is joining other countries to celebrate World Radio Day. If you look at what we have achieved as a country, today we have 150 operational licensed community radio stations. This is a very vibrant industry in the country and we are hoping it will continue to grow further.”

According to Molakeng, there are about 23 commercial radio stations and 19 public stations in the country.
