Unionists call for new labour union─── 08:50 Sun, 01 May 2016
Boksburg - Over 2000 trade unionists have called for the formation of a new trade union federation to rival Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu).
The SABC reports 50 unions held a worker's summit in Boksburg on Gauteng's East Rand on Saturday and they were unanimous in their calls for a federation to be launched which will rival Cosatu.
Former Cosatu general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi was explicit on why the country needs a new federation.
A new federation has been on the cards since Vavi and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) were expelled from Cosatu.
Union bosses attending the workers summit say it's time for an independent organisation to represent workers. They are calling on workers to turn out in their numbers at their Workers Day rally in Tembisa on Sunday.
