Cape Town – The National Assembly on Wednesday voted to approve the Presidency budget.

The budget was presented by President Jacob Zuma in Parliament on May 4.

It was approved when 212 MPs voted in its favour, with 64 against and two abstentions.

In a declaration before the vote, the DA said the lack of a dedicated portfolio committee for the Presidency was a failure on the part of Parliament.

The party said that supporting the Presidency bill meant it was acceptable for nearly nine million South Africans to be out of work.

ANC chief whip, Jackson Mthembu, said the party supported the Presidency budget vote, as it supported the peace and stability established through the advent of democracy.

The National Assembly also approved Parliament’s budget vote.

The budget was approved despite disapproval from the opposition parties.

DA chief whip, John Steenhuisen, said they refused to support the budget.

ANC deputy chief whip, Doris Dlakude, said it was important to support Parliament’s budget.

"Because, without Parliament, government will not be able to do anything," she said.
