Visible policing to continue in Hammanskraal | News Article

Pretoria - The police would continue monitoring the situation in Hammanskraal, acting national police commissioner, Kgomotso Phahlane, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference, Phahlane called the violence that has gripped the community in the north of Pretoria since Monday "an eviction gone wrong".

"There was an eviction underway which went wrong to the extent that buses were torched and two people killed in the process. They were attacked by the community," he said.

He said the police had done the necessary in terms of deployment to the area.

"We continue with our visibility in the area as needed," he said.

He had not yet received any reports regarding violence on Tuesday, so he could not comment on it, he said.

Red Ants security company staff started demolishing the residents' shacks on Monday after the City of Tshwane obtained a court order.

This sparked violent protests in the area which saw roads blocked with burning tyres and rocks. Several vehicles have also been burnt while stones and petrol bombs were thrown at Red Ants.

Two employees of Red Ants were killed on Monday during the protests.
