Cop drives himself to hospital after being shot | News Article

Cape Town - A policeman assigned to the VIP Protection Unit in Cape Town managed to drive himself to hospital after he was shot and injured in Delft on Tuesday night, the Hawks have confirmed.

Spokesperson, Major Robert Netshiunda, said the officer was injured in the lower abdomen when he was shot by unknown suspects shortly after his shift ended.

"The 35-year-old sergeant was approaching the traffic lights at Sarah Baartman and Symphony Roads at around 22:30 when three men approached him and fired shots," he said.

"The brave policeman returned fire and the suspects fled the scene."

The officer is in a stable condition.

Netshiunda said this is the second police attack in three days.

A warrant officer in KwaZulu-Natal was shot and killed on Sunday night as he pursued a suspect in the shooting death of a security guard at a clinic.
