Pretoria - Two people were killed at Mabopane Central City shopping centre in Tshwane after the area was hit by violent protests and looting overnight.

The bodies were found by police and journalists covering the aftermath of the looting on Thursday morning.

This will take the death toll to five since clashes broke out in townships across the city on Sunday evening when the ruling African National Congress announced that former public works minister Thoko Didiza was its mayoral candidate for Tshwane.

News24 reported earlier on Thursday that police called for urgent back-up in Mabopane Central City on Wednesday night; saying they had run out of rubber bullets.

On Thursday morning, the area, which appears to be a loading zone, was strewn with items looted from stores.

It was cordoned off with a forensic pathology vehicle standing by.

Yellow cones demarcated places where spent live cartridges were found by crime scene investigators.

Two people were shot dead during looting in Mamelodi between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

On Sunday night, an ANC member was shot dead outside the Tshwane Events Centre, formerly known as the Pretoria Showgrounds, as the party was set to announce Didiza as mayoral candidate for the city.
