Traffic volumes set to increase on the eve of Durban July─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 07:44 Fri, 01 Jul 2016
Durban - Traffic volumes along routes heading to Durban in KwaZulu-Natal are expected to increase from today as people are starting to travel to this year’s Durban July horse race.
ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Bodasing, says motorists should drive with caution and adhere to safety precautions while driving to the annual highlight on sporting and social calendars that takes place tomorrow.
She says travellers should ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. A safety check prior to driving to a destination should be conducted inspecting all vehicle lights, tyres and windscreen wipers. Ensure you have a spare wheel, tyre jack, fire extinguisher and first aid kit in your vehicle.
She says it is important to obey the rules of the road. Drivers must be well rested while regular breaks need to be taken during travelling.
"Refrain from speeding and follow safe distances. Be alert at all times and avoid being impatient. Avoid road rage. Don't drive under the influence of liquor or drugs. Do not text and drive. Children and pets need to be appropriately restrained while in the vehicle," she says.
In case of a medical emergency, call ER24 on 084-124.
