ID application process Improved─── 14:53 Thu, 14 Jul 2016
Pretoria - The problem of South Africans without Identity documents is on the rise. This is according to the Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba.
Speaking at the opening of the revamped Home Affairs offices in the Free State yesterday, Gigaba mentioned that the number of uncollected IDs at Home Affairs currently stands at 208 000 - 160 000 Smart ID Cards, and 48 000 green barcoded IDs.
Gigaba said long travelling distances were the reason why people did not collect their IDs. To ensure that every citizen is in possession of an identity document, the process of obtaining an ID has been improved.
“We ask municipalities to help us by providing transport for the indigenous, the poor, the pensioners, school children and the elderly to collect IDs from Home Affairs. When you apply for your ID, the process is digitised” Gigaba added.
