Implats jobs on the line after closure of Gupta bank accounts─── 07:55 Wed, 20 Jul 2016
Rustenburg - Trade union Solidarity says about 340 JIC Mining Services workers, part of the Gupta-owned firm Oakbay Investments, might lose their jobs due to the closing of the controversial family businesses’ bank accounts.
JIC is a contractor at Impala Platinum Mine (Implats) and employs approximately 1200 people.
Earlier this year, South Africa’s four biggest banks closed down Oakbay accounts and withdrew their services to Gupta businesses over regulatory concerns.
Solidarity general secretary, Gideon du Plessis, said Implats has threatened not to renew the contract of JIC since this company no longer has a South African bank account.
In a statement, du Plessis said Implats gave JIC until the end of October to open a local bank account again in order to prevent the termination of the contracts of JIC’s 340 workers employed at Impala’s Rustenburg mines.
