Bloemfontein - The IEC announced that, because of the record number of political parties and candidates contesting the 2016 Municipal Elections, it had to enlarge the ballot papers for blind and visually impaired voters.

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokesperson, Kate Bapela, says they developed a special new 32-window cardboard ballot template in collaboration with Blind South Africa and the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB).

This was to accommodate all candidates. The biggest template will be used in Cape Town, where the highest number of candidates are contesting.

"The province with the largest number of political parties is the Western Cape. It is in situations like these where our ballot papers became bigger. The ballot paper in the Western Cape is an A3 ballot paper. We just want to ensure that our voters are not getting frustrated because they cannot be assisted or helped," Bapela said.
