Matatiele - Severe weather conditions in the North Eastern Cape have led to electricity disruptions affecting as many as 57 000 customers.

Eskom says the areas affected are in parts of Matatiele, Mount Frere, Qumbu, Qunu, Mqanduli and surrounding villages.

The parastatal says its technicians are working hard to restore supply to those areas.

Eskom has apologised for the inconvenience and also cautioned customers to treat all electricity appliances as live as the power supply may be restored at any time.

Meanwhile a number of roads and mountain passes in the Eastern Cape interior are currently closed due to heavy snowfalls.

Provincial Traffic Deputy Director Charles Bramwell says three of the busiest mountain passes are among those closed.

These are the Loodsberg-pas between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg, the Wapadsberg-pas between Cradock and Graaff-Reinet and the Penhoek pass between Queenstown and Jamestown.
