Harmony and POPCRU enter into community partnership | News Article

vIRGINIA - Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) is to partner with the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) in establishing an academic precinct in the Free State.


The memorandum of agreement was signed today at a function attended by the Premier of the Free State, Ace Magashule with members of his Executive Council, Harmony Chairman Mr Patrice Motsepe and Chief Executive Officer Peter Steenkamp, and representatives of POPCRU, Matjhabeng municipality, among others.

In terms of this agreement, Harmony will be donating properties and buildings to POPCRU. POPCRU will undertake any rehabilitation of the properties and buildings necessary for their conversion into a well-equipped academy.  The academy will offer basic and specialised training to police officers and prison wardens who are members of the union as well as offering a range of technical and skills training for local youth.

“This event marks a further deepening of Harmony’s commitment to participating and partnering in the sustainable development of Matjhabeng, of Virginia and of the surrounding areas. We at Harmony, are committed to making a difference to our stakeholders and we aim to leave lasting legacies for our employees and for our host communities,” said Peter Steenkamp, chief executive officer of Harmony.

The premier of the Free State, Ace Magashule, “It is important that we work together to ensure the upliftment of our communities, our province and, ultimately, our country. The partnership being launched here today is an example of what is needed to uplift and improve the lives of all involved.”
