DA takes Mogale City mayorship, ANC speaker | News Article

Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance’s Lynn Pannall was sworn in as executive mayor of Mogale City Local Municipality, west of Johannesburg on Thursday.

DA leader in Gauteng, John Moodey said, Pannall was elected by a combined vote from the DA, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

Mogale City was one of the hung municipalities in Gauteng after the ANC won 48.84 percent of the vote, while the DA won 34.88 percent, the EFF 11.65 percent and the FF Plus 2.29 percent.

The African National Congress (ANC) won the the speaker position after the IFP split its vote during the first sitting of the new council, voting with the DA for mayor and ANC for speaker.

“The vote of confidence in Pannall shows that the majority of people in Mogale City has opted to vote for change that will stop corruption, create jobs and deliver better services for all,” Moodey said.

Moodey said the DA had full confidence in Pannall’s abilities to successfully occupy the mayoral office and bring about change that would put the people of Mogale City first.

“On behalf of the DA in Gauteng, I wish to extend her our warmest congratulations and wish her all the best in her position as executive mayor,” Moodey said.

Pannall’s election was not without drama as insults were traded between the ANC and DA’s coalition partners inside the council chambers.
