Cape Town - Two Nigerian men and a pair of local women were arrested in Cape Town on Tuesday night for opening accounts with banks in South Africa and using them to receive ill-gotten monies from online dating victims, the Hawks said on Wednesday.
The Hawks said a suspect was arrested shortly after receiving a dummy parcel at Postnet Somerset West Mall. The Hawks had sent the parcel.
Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the Hawks seized five laptops, two of them with profiles of people who have been fraudulently used to scam people online, as well as 12 cell phones.
The suspects, aged between 27 and 38 years, will make their first appearance at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
The arrest of these four suspects takes the total number of suspects arrested for online dating scams to 11.
