Surprise Khwezi protest should never happen again - top cop | News Article

Cape Town – Police were looking at finding ways to make sure they were never again surprised by a protest like "Remember Khwezi", acting national commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane, told Parliament on Wednesday.

Phahlane was briefing the police committee on their plans and deployment of officers during the local government elections.

He was asked to provide details on the "security breach" which occurred when a group of women protesting against rape disrupted President Jacob Zuma’s speech at the IEC’s results centre on Saturday, August 6.

"It was so spontaneous. There is a commitment we made to look into the details and to find ways of not having a recurrence of such," Phahlane told the committee.

He would not divulge details on the security breach and merely said everyone had a democratic right to voice their issues.

"Safe to say, it is something that we have observed and we will work hard to deal with matters of this nature."

The four young women held up placards that read "10 years later", "Remember Khwezi", "I am one in 3", and "Khanga", while Zuma delivered his speech at the IEC following the elections.

They were referring to Zuma’s 2006 rape trial a decade ago, when the president was acquitted of raping a then 31-year-old HIV-positive family friend, known as Khwezi.
