Stellenbosch - It is not true that only the rich seem to get bail when they find themselves accused of a crime, NPA Western Cape spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said on Tuesday.

“There is no such thing,” he said, after Geffen Realty International Franchises' CEO, Jason Rohde, was granted bail of R1.1 million by the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court.

He had to pay R100 000 in cash and provide R1 million in surety.

Ntabazalila's comments came after rumblings about him getting bail, such as @ChimCham7 who tweeted: ''Obviously, the Sotheby's Realtor CEO Jason Rohde has been given bail on his murder accusation charge because he is both white and rich.”

Ntabazalila said anyone could apply for bail, and it was not only granted to the wealthy.

Rohde was arrested last Tuesday and accused of killing his wife Susan. She was found dead in the bathroom of their hotel room at the Spier wine farm, near Stellenbosch, on July 24.

The two had been attending a property conference. At first it was thought she might have killed herself. Rohde was arrested after police allegedly found evidence of foul play.

He maintains it was suicide, based on a private report commissioned by his lawyers. In spite of it being considered a serious offence, the State decided not to oppose bail during his return to court on Tuesday.

He had to report to the police station in the seaside town of Melkbosstrand on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He was not allowed near the country’s exit ports without the investigating officer’s permission. He could apply to travel to Gauteng, where his daughter was preparing for her matric exams.
