Zuma calls for regulated ivory trade─── 11:26 Sun, 25 Sep 2016
Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma says regulated trade in ivory could yield huge development benefits for those residing in national parks and conservation areas.
The SABC reports the President was addressing delegates at the opening of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.
Zuma has called for a well-managed and monitored legal trade in ivory and other endangered species. He said the illegal trade in wildlife, including poaching, presents significant challenges and threats to the environment including undermining the potential benefits arising from legal trade that contributes significantly to socio-economic upliftment and development.
