UCT was on academic shutdown, although the premises remained open, with the exception of the library.

Vice Chancellor Max Price said in a statement on Sunday that the decision was taken in order to protect the university's property, while not escalating the violence by bringing private security onto the campus.

He acknowledged the prevailing "anxiety" over the decision, and thanked students for supporting and engaging each other.

Price said it was still possible to complete the academic year after work resumed next Monday, but graduations would have to take place in June 2017.

Stellenbosch University spokesperson, Martin Viljoen, meanwhile told News24 that classes and tests would continue as scheduled this week, following disciplinary hearings against protesting students on Friday.

Eleven students involved in occupying the university's library last week had been suspended pending the completion of their disciplinary processes.

A further 19 had been interdicted, but could still attend lectures and participate in academic activities.

University of the Western Cape spokesperson, Luthando Tyhalibongo, said its campus was quiet on Monday and that its schedule was continuing as normal.

"We still remain on alert though, because anything could happen," he added.
