Cape Town - South African State Security Minister, David Mahlobo, on Monday announced Arthur Fraser as his department’s new director-general and accounting officer.

Fraser, a former deputy director general in the former National Intelligence Agency, would start work on Monday after his appointment was signed off by President Jacob Zuma, Mahlobo said in a statement.

“He brings with him immense understanding and knowledge of the intelligence environment and his astute managerial experience which will help move the organisation forward,” said Mahlobo.

“We believe Mr Fraser is equal to the task and will provide the necessary leadership that will ensure the Agency is able to deliver on its constitutional and legal mandate of upholding national security.”

In 2009, the Mail and Guardian reported that Fraser was the man who leaked the so-called spy tapes to Zuma’s lawyers, effectively leading to 783 charges of corruption against him being withdrawn.

Earlier this year, the high court in Pretoria, however, said the decision to drop charges against the president was irrational.
