Johannesburg – NPA head, Shaun Abrahams, must publicly declare the real reasons behind his visit to Luthuli House, DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach said on Monday.

If he had nothing to hide, he should make the minutes of the meeting publicly available, she said in a statement.

The Sunday Times reported that Abrahams had met President Jacob Zuma and three Cabinet ministers at ANC headquarters on October 10, a day before he announced that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan would be charged with fraud. Breytenbach said Abrahams’s explanation that the meeting, at Justice Minister Michael Masutha’s invitation, to discuss student protests with ANC leaders, "falls flat". This was because the ministers of higher education, finance, and police were not present. She said his visit called into question his ability to properly fulfill his constitutional obligations as an impartial National Prosecuting Authority head.

"To seriously suggest that the public believe that he did not discuss the impending prosecution of such a high profile individual is ludicrous."

It was of utmost importance that the NPA remained impartial in fulfilling its mandate to act in the interest of the South African public, she said.
