Municipalities should employ engineers─── CATHY DLODLO 10:13 Thu, 27 Oct 2016
Bloemfontein - Municipalities should start employing local engineers if they want to improve their service delivery track record.
This is according to the CEO of the SA Institute of Civil Engineering (SAICE), Manglin Pillay.
He says municipalities are at the core of infrastructure delivery and maintenance, but very few of them have civil engineers in their employment.
Pillay was reacting to an announcement by the National Department of Water And Sanitation that South Africa has signed an agreement with Italy to import engineering skills.
He says a shortage of these skills in the country, is a myth.
"Local engineers are very competitive in terms of cost locally, in Africa, and around the world. So cost can’t be an issue. I suspect it might be political moves. If you look at municipalities – they are responsible for infrastructure delivery (and need engineers), but most do not have engineers."
