Durban - Police have dispelled rumours that #FeesMustFall student leader, Bonginkosi Khanyile, was stabbed to death in Westville Prison.

The rumour of his death swept across social media platforms, with many tweeting that he had been stabbed while in custody.

Khanyile was denied bail after his arrest on charges of public violence during protest action at the Durban University of Technology.

During a lengthy application for bail, the court heard that Khanyile had faced similar charges for his role in protest action at the Mangosuthu University of Technology.

He is due in court again later in November.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Media centre confirmed that the Westville Prison had not reported any attack or death in detention.

A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Khanyile was alive and well, and had confirmed the same with Correctional Services officials.
