Johannesburg – A Hawks officer was shot dead, allegedly by his own colleagues, a spokesperson for the crime-fighting unit said on Monday.

Warrant Officer Colbern Mashego pulled over two police officers in Boksburg on Sunday evening while they were driving to OR Tambo International Airport, allegedly with a bag full of drugs, Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, said.

When Mashego approached the car a shootout broke out. He was shot dead. One of the two officers apparently committed suicide, Mulaudzi said.

The second officer, a sergeant, fled the scene and was arrested later. A bag containing drugs was seized.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, said the police officers were driving a Ford Ranger. The shooting happened in Jet Park, near Emperor’s Palace Casino.
