Bothaville - People from across the country are expected to converge on Nampo Park just outside Bothaville in the Free State on Friday 27 November to pray for rain and for the country as a whole.

This during a prayer day organised by Grain SA in collaboration with numerous other agricultural organisations and affiliates.

Grain SA’s Nita van der Merwe says they have prepared to receive about 1500 people.

"First we are going to pray for the country, followed by a message to be delivered by Dawie Spies. Heinz Winkler will also be there to join us for a praise singing session.

"Then we will specifically pray for agriculture and for rain... that is the main purpose of the day, to ask for rain."

The prayer day comes as farmers across the country are adversely affected by the drought. There are reports of thousands of animal deaths while maize farmers in certain parts of the country have already missed out on the planting window for this year due to insufficient soil moisture levels.

Van der Merwe says they have received confirmation of attendance from people as far afield as Witbank in Mpumalanga. She says anyone is welcome to attend.

The prayer event takes place at Nampo Park from 10:00. Gates will open at 08:00.
