Initiative to fast track “Women in Maize” | News Article

Bloemfontein - Government is partnering with beer giant South African Breweries (SAB) in a R20-million initiative aimed at fast-tracking the inclusion of black emerging women farmers into the economy.

According to a statement, the "Women in Maize" initiative is being driven by the Department of Small Business Development in partnership with SAB and the Agricultural Research Council.

About 100 emerging farmers in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal will be targeted in the first phase of the project. They are currently supposed to be engaged in planting yellow maize.

The women are estimated to collectively produce about 16 000 tons of yellow maize, which will then be purchased from the farmers by SAB.

SAB says the initiative forms part of its Go Farming programme.
