World gathers to talk about climate change | News Article

Paris - As South Africa continues to grapple with a drought that some are describing as the worst since the 1920s, heads of state from 190 nations are converging on Paris for the latest round of global climate change talks.

The official website states that the COP21 event, also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, is intended to bring about a legally binding and universal agreement on climate aimed at keeping global warming below 2°C.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, South Africa will be represented by President Jacob Zuma and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa.

South Africa’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) meanwhile highlights its commitment towards ensuring temperature increases are kept below the 2°C pre-industrial levels. It also states that South Africa, along with other developing countries, is especially vulnerable to the impact of climate change, particularly around water and food security.

The Conference continues until 11 December.
