Fertiliser roleplayers hopeful of good demand in new season─── 14:00 Thu, 28 Apr 2016
Bloemfontein - The Fertiliser Association of Southern Africa, Fertasa, has revealed that summer crop production hectares in the current season have dropped by 22% compared to the previous year.
This is according to a statement following the association’s 56th congress in April.
It states that the annual report by Chairperson Adriaan de Lange, who is also the managing director of Omnia Fertilisers, indicates that maize hectares declined by some 27%. However, sunflower plantings reportedly increased by about 20%.
Fertasa says it believes the current harvest/fertiliser price relation is favourable in comparison to the previous season and should be able to support the demand for fertiliser in the 2016/17 planting season. It adds, though, that fertiliser sales in 2016 will be largely dependent on rainfall.
Congress also heard that international fertiliser prices remain under pressure due to overcapacity, with urea and potassium prices having declined by nearly 40% since January 2015.
