Huge international interest anticipated at Dorper World Championships in Bloemfontein | News Article

Bloemfontein - More than 1200 Dorper and White Dorper sheep from at least 43 different exhibitors are strutting their stuff at Bloem Show this week during the biennial Dorper World Chamionships on until May 6.

The national championships also take place this week. Dorper Breed Society President Dries Wiesse says the fact that Bloemfontein is centrally located makes it a lot easier for exhibitors from across the country to show their stock.

He says there is also a lot of international interest and they are anticipating delegations from China, Russia, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico and other countries that are part of the international Dorper federation.

He says international interest like this is also very important for the breed as a whole:

"For example, we had an enquiry out of Russia from a company that is looking for 600 000 Dorper ewes.

"We are the leading breeders, because the Dorper was first developed here. More countries are realising that if they want good Dorper genetics, they need to come and get it here."
