Agbiz Congress aims to unpack business environment | News Article

Somerset West - With South Africa at a major cross roads, or even a T-junction, it is crucial for agri businesses and roleplayers along the food value chain to understand the environment in which they are operating.

This is according to Agbiz CEO, John Purchase, who says this has been among the main criteria taken into account in structuring the programme for the agricultural business chambers’ forthcoming biennial Congress. Some of the key factors on the agenda include factors such as the economic outlook, trade development, water and energy issues, land reform debates and various other South African scenarios.

The keynote speaker is Reserve Bank Governor, Lesetja Kganyago. Purchase says a lot of time will also be spent on the political economy of South Africa.

“Minister Pravin Gordhan has said it a couple of times and the rating agencies keep saying it to us – you cannot divorce what’s happening in politics from the economy.

“So the new buzz word is the political economy and we will be exploring that in detail to see how that’s going to impact the South African business environment going forward. So we are looking forward to some robust interaction and discussion.”

The Congress takes place at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West, Cape Town on June 1 and 2, with a pre-congress workshop on 31 May. Agbiz also celebrates its 70th anniversary during congress and will host its AGM.
