Drought in Springbok at critical stage | News Article

Springbok - About 300 commercial and emerging farmers in and around Springbok in the Northern Cape received some much needed feed for their animals today as they continue to battle the impact of the drought.

This as Agri SA President Johannes Moller and Agri Northern Cape President Henk van Wyk were also on hand to receive a donation of R1 million from Shell for the organisation’s drought relief fund.

Van Wyk says the area where they were today remains critically dry.

“Halfway between Pofadder and Springbok, towards Springbok, and then down south towards Van Rhynsdorp, it is critically dry. The winter will have to come quickly to help us, to help our farmers, so they can get some relief.

“You know rainwater helps to melt most of a farmer’s problems away. We are looking forward and have turned hungry eyes to the heavens, coupled with prayers in our hearts, to ask for relief.”

Van Wyk says hopes are now that the winter rainfall area will receive good rain over the next while.

He says they handed over about R600 000 worth of feed today but adds although it will help tide farmers over for a short while, it won’t be enough to ensure their survival.

He says if the area does not receive proper rain this winter Government will have to step in to prevent largescale livestock deaths.
