Marketing strategies key to meat producer sustainability─── SABRINA DEAN 18:10 Mon, 30 May 2016
Bloemfontein - With as much as 60% of the price of meat being determined on the other side of the farm gate, it is critical for producers to use every tool at their disposal to ensure maximum profit.
This is according to Free State Red Meat Producer’s Organisation (RPO) Chairperson, Neels de Villiers, ahead of the annual congress happening in Bloemfontein next week. De Villiers says the provincial congress takes place under the theme “Marketing Strategies for Sustainable Red Meat Production”.
He says they hope the range of expert speakers will place producers in a position to maximise profit.
“Nick Serfontein is going to speak about the feedlot contract concept. Dr Kobus Laubscher will speak about traceability – which is if you speak about quality meat it will be meat that can be traced from the shop's shelf all the way back to the farm.
“Our next speaker will be Dr John Purchase, who will speak about partnerships in agri businesses. Luaan van der Walt is then going to speak on the future contracts for beef and weaner calves.”
Other speakers include Professor Johann Kirsten and Dr Bobby van der Westhuizen.
The congress takes place at Leopards and Lace in Bloemfontein on June 9 with a welcoming function on the evening of June 8.
