Maize imports will need to be ramped up | News Article

Bloemfontein - South Africa will have to up its yellow maize imports significantly to reach the desired import requirement of almost 50 000 tons per week for the current maize marketing season.

This is according to the latest Agbiz Grain Import Watch after the weekly average dropped to around 33 000 tons in June.

The report states that we have so far received 9% of the anticipated 2,7 million tons that are needed. No yellow maize imports were received in the week of June 11 to 17.

The report also states that concern remains over the availability of white maize, with the last consignment having arrived from the USA in mid May. Agbiz says the possibility of meeting the required 1,1 million tons of white maize imports looks unlikely.

Average white maize imports currently stand at about 3000 tons per week, which is way below the desired amount of just over 21 000 tons per week.
