Sapa embarks on the “real” journey to transformation─── SABRINA DEAN 16:18 Thu, 23 Jun 2016
Johannesburg, The fact that poultry producers are involved in making food, means there is no doubt about there being a future in the industry.
This is according to SA Poultry Association CEO Kevin Lovell.
He says, however, that the poultry industry is currently under tremendous pressure due to high feed input costs and import pressures, among others. He says egg prices have also risen as producers go out of business.
On the upside, Lovell says they are making huge strides in transformation after Achmat Brinkhuis was this week elected as the first black Chairperson of the association:
“We’ve got all these pictures from 1904 of these old white men with fancy ties and now we’re actually starting the transformation journey for real. It’s really exciting for everybody.”
Meanwhile Farmer’s Weekly journalist Wilma den Hartig is attending Avi Africa 2016. She explains that Tracy Davids from the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy said it is very important for SA to ensure that the broiler industry remains sustainable.
“Basically she said it is very important for SA to ensure that the broiler industry remains sustainable. It’s a very important agribusiness sub-sector.
“She said it contributes 16,5% to gross agricultural production value – that was last year’s statistics – and also employs 50 000 people directly and 100 000 further down in the value chain.”
