Parys - Some of the most magnificent, proudly South African horses strut their stuff at the Afridome in Parys during the national SA Boerperd championships from June 27 to July 2.

The SA Boerperd Breed Society council member, Petro Grove, says they are expecting about 250 horses from across the country to participate in nearly 1000 classes at the show.

She says the breed excels at numerous disciplines, ranging from dressage and showjumping to endurance, field work or pleasure riding. Show classes cater for five-gaited horses with a very high knee action, as well as the medium to low action Universal types.

Grove says there is a common misconception that an SA Boerperd is any horse owned by a farmer.

“The SA Boerperd originates from 1652 and the breed has been developed indigenously. The SA Boerperd is a brand marked, registered breed. Its records are kept at SA Studbook and the pedigree register enables us to send a five generation pedigree (family tree).

“Every foal that is born is recorded at SA Stud Book, hair samples are taken and sent for DNA testing. Then we can verify that the mother and father of the foal were also registered."

She says the highlight of the show is July 2 when all the final Championship classes take place.
