FS Bonsmara breeder scoops national herd improvement award─── SABRINA DEAN 14:28 Mon, 29 Aug 2016
Pretoria - A Free State farmer has beaten competitors from as far afield as Namibia to walk away with the title for Beef Cattle Improvement Herd of the Year at the Agricultural Research Council’s National Beef Awards in Pretoria last week.
Nick Serfontein of Sernick Bonsmaras says they feel honoured to have been named the national winner in the improvement herd category. He says they initiated performance recording on their Bonsmara herd in 1988.
“We made our phase-C bull testing station where we test average daily grain and feed conversion, which is becoming more and more important in South Africa and all over the world because of the cost of grains.
“I think that we made huge improvements there.”
North West farmer Kleinjan Gasekoma also played his part in holding central South Africa’s name high after being named the national Small Scale Commercial Beef Producer of the Year.
The national award for the Special Performance Test Class went to an SA Angus black bull owned by Fredericksburg Angus Stud in Franschhoek.
