Maize estimate up in final summer grains forecast | News Article

Bloemfontein - The expected commercial maize crop for 2016 has been revised upwards by more than 3%.

This as the Crop Estimate’s Committee (CEC) releases its final production forecast for summer crops. The CEC said in its report this week the expected commercial maize crop has now been set at just over 7,5-million tons, or nearly 240 000 tons more than the previous forecast.

The biggest change is in white maize with the production estimate up more than 5% at 3,25-million tons. Yellow maize production is estimated at nearly 4,3-million tons.

Sunflower production has been estimated at 755 000 tons, which is 1,65% higher than the previous forecast.

The dry beans forecast remains unchanged, soybeans are down just over 1% and sorghum expectations decreased nearly 10%. The ground nut crop has been hardest hit with the estimate reduced nearly 30% to 18 850 tons.

The CEC will next month release its first ‘intentions of farmers’ to plant estimate for the 2017 summer crop season.
