Tractor market remains under pressure

Tractor market remains under pressure | News Article

The agricultural machinery industry is expecting that tractor sales could be as much as 20% lower than last year.

The latest report by the South African Agricultural Machinery Association, Saama, states that 623 units were sold in September. This is only 2% down on the same time last year. However year-to-date tractor sales are 14% down on those for the same time last year.

Combine harvester figures paint an even bleaker picture. Fourteen units were sold September this year compared to 19 in 2015, resulting in a drop of 26%. Year-to-date sales are about 16% down.

Saama Chairperson Wynn Dedwith says industry expectations are that sales will be down 15% to 20% on last year. He says fundamentals underpinning the market have not changed much in the last month, adding that rainfall prospects remain a big concern.
