Tomatoes, potatoes in short supply in Botswana─── 09:02 Thu, 19 Jan 2017
Bloemfontein - Botswana is facing a fresh produce shortage due to a self-imposed import ban.
Farmer’s Weekly reports that Botswana imposed the ban on fresh produce such as tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers and beetroots, among others, following the discovery of the tomato leaf miner (Tuta absoluta) within its borders.
Much of Botswana’s fresh produce comes from South Africa as local production cannot cater for demand.
The report also quotes produce category buyer for Spar, John White. The retailer also does business in Botswana.
White says tomatoes are already in short supply and potatoes are no longer available at their stores in Botswana.
