Bloemfontein - Milk imports for most of last year were significantly down on the volumes imported in 2015.

The latest Milk Producer's Organisation Milk Bulletin reports that imports for January to November 2016 were just under 40 000 tons, which is 36% less than for the same period in 2015.

On the flip side, exports from South Africa also declined, coming in at 18% lower than the year before.

Looking at local intake, data from Milk SA reveals that milk intake in December was around 276 million litres, nearly 1% higher than December 2015.

Total milk production in South Africa last year is estimated at around 3 billion litres.
