Pretoria - Although water restrictions for Gauteng province are being lifted, restrictions elsewhere in the country remain in place unless communicated otherwise.

The Department of Water and Sanitation says water restrictions would only have been lifted in Gauteng at this stage. Department spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, says all other restrictions will remain in place for the time being. This also applies to irrigation restrictions.

He says further information will be communicated following a hydrological review to be undertaken by the department in May.

Ratau confirmed that this means that irrigation restrictions along the Caledon and Modder River, the Orange River and parts of the Vaal River, among others, will remain in place until further notice.

Meanwhile, residents downstream of the Vaal and Bloemhof Dams are being urged to remain on high alert for possible flooding as both of these dams are now at 100% capacity. Animals and equipment, especially in low-lying areas, should be moved to safety.
