SA expected to produce more than 13,9 million tons of maize this year | News Article

Bloemfontein - South Africa is expected to produce nearly 80% more maize in the 2017 production season than in the previous season.

This was revealed by the Crop Estimate's Committee today as it releases its first production forecast for summer crops. It is suggesting an expected commercial maize crop of just over 13,9 million tons, which would be over 6-million tons more than last year's harvest.

The groundnut harvest is meanwhile expected to increase just shy of 400% this year to end at an anticipated total of just over 88 000 tons. Soya production is expected to increase by over 44%, dry beans by nearly 82% and sorghum by about 100%. Sunflower seed production is expected to decrease by 23% this year.

The next production forecast for summer crops will be released on March 28.
