Table grape producers on track for normal year | News Article

Bloemfontein - The South African Table Grape Industry (Sati) says it is still anticipating a normal crop for the 2016/17 harvest season.

The organisation’s second crop estimate for the season is pointing to a harvest of between 61-million and 63-million cartons. It says the harvest is already finished in the Northern Provinces region, with the final estimate at 5,3-million cartons.

Sati says conditions are seemingly better than expected in one of the country’s biggest table grape producing regions, namely the Orange River region. Expectations are that the initial estimate for the region will increase to 20,3-million cartons of 4.5kg each.

The harvest is about halfway done in the Olifants River region, with the Hex River and Berg River harvests in full swing.

Sati says anticipated harvest levels will see the industry revert to a normal harvest following last year’s drought impact.
