Wayde wins big at SA Sports Awards─── 09:18 Mon, 23 Nov 2015
World 400m sprint champion, Wayde van Niekerk, has more than a million reasons to smile following the South African Sports Awards on Sunday night in Bloemfontein.
The local sprinter walked away as the big winner last night at the event held at Sand du Plessis theatre by being named the South African Sportsman, South African Sports Star and People’s Choice of the Year winner.
The three awards saw Van Niekerk earning a whopping R1.1 million for his efforts on the track and he drove away in not one, but two brand new luxury German cars.
Upon receiving his third award, Van Niekerk said he drew inspiration from his fellow nominees.
Cycling sensation, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, grew up in the City of Roses and was named as the South African Sportswoman of the Year for her phenomenal season and the work she does to empower woman in the sport.
The Blitzbokke, who finished second in the 2014/15 HSBC Sevens World Series, won the South African Sports Team of the Year award, while swimmer Chad le Clos’ coach, Graham Hill, walked away with the Coach of the Year award.
Van Niekerk will be jetting off to London today where he will be doing a photoshoot for his apparel suppliers’ advertising campaign leading into the 2016 Rio Olympics.
