Van Niekerk to run in SA Open Championships─── MORGAN PIEK 08:46 Tue, 03 May 2016
It has been confirmed that the world 400m sprint champion, Wayde van Nierkerk, will be in action this weekend during the South African Open Championships in Bloemfontein.
There were reports suggesting that the home town hero would also be competing in the men’s 100m and 200m sprint, however he will only be competing in the 400m.
Van Niekerk’s sights are set on the 400m Olympic gold during the 2016 Rio Games in August.
This weekend’s meet will be the first for four events in which he will be competing before staking his claim on the gold in Brazil.
The meet at the Free State Athletics stadium in Bloemfontein will also be his last on home soil before heading overseas and then the Olympics.
Last month the South African Sportsman of the Year won the 400m sprint at the South African Championship in Stellenbosch in a time of 44.98 seconds.
