With just 18 days to go before the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the sprinter Akani Simbine, smashed the South African 100m sprint record.

Simbine set the new benchmark at 9.89 seconds last night during the Gyulai Istvan Memorial meet in Hungary.

What made is feat even more impressive is that fact that he beat the highly rated former world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica to the gold.

The South African fired a warning shot to other sprinters from across the world and automatically made himself a strong medal contender for the games in Brazil.

The fact that he also set the new record at the coast also speaks volumes of his impressive display last night.

Simbine is now officially the second fastest man in Africa with only Nigeria’s Olusoji Fasuba’s 9.85 seconds with overshadows his time.

Simbine set his previous South African record of 9.96 seconds earlier this year at the Pilditch Athletics Stadium in Pretoria.
