A memorial service will be held for the late South African Rally Champion and athlete, Gugu Zulu, next week Tuesday.

Zulu passed away on Monday while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

The 40 remaining members who were part of the Trek4Mandela Expedition, arrived back in South Africa on Wednesday night and Zulu’s body will be repatriated on Friday.

Sello Hatang of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said during a media conference that he will be returning to East Africa next year to climb Kilimanjaro again to reconnect with Zulu’s infectious smile.

“I’m devastated,” said Hatang.

“I have no words to tell you as South Africa about the loss of Gugu Zulu.

“If there is one thing that stood out with Gugu, it was his smile.

“He had the most beautiful smile, and that smile is what I want to reconnect with.

“Because it’s that smile that makes us great on any given day, even when you’re depressed you have to see Gugu’s smile and you felt better.

“I know when I reconnect with it again on Kilimanjaro next year, I will be reconnecting with that smile again to feel better.”

Fittingly Zulu’s memorial service will be held at the Kyalami Raceway.

The service on Tuesday morning begins at 11am and is open to the public.
