The javelin thrower, Zanele Situ, won South Africa’s eighth medal at the Paralympic yesterday in Rio de Janeiro.

Situ won the bronze in the women’s T54 javelin with a personal best throw of 17.9m, which was briefly also a Paralympics record.

The athlete had the honour of bearing the South African flag during the opening ceremony a week ago.

Her medal yesterday was her fourth at the Paralympics after winning the gold in 2000 and 2004 and the discus silver in 2000.

Flora Ugwunwa won the gold yesterday with a world record throw of 20.25m while Tunisia’s Hania Aidi took the silver with a distance of 18.88m.

Meanwhile, Anruné Liebenberg won her heat in the women’s T47 400m in 1 minute 1.79 seconds to set the second fastest time during the heats.
