The Frenchman, Stéphane Peterhansel, is well on his way to winning a record 13th Dakar Rally title after winning the 7th stage of the world’s most gruelling rally.

Peterhansel won the shortened stage in 01:54:08 to beat his compatriot, Sébastien Loeb, by 48 seconds and retain the overall lead.

The 2009 champion, Giniel de Villiers of South Africa, ran in third in a time of 01:57:41, just 3 minutes and 33 seconds off the pace of Peterhansel, and it was also his best stage of the 2017 event.

This has seen De Villiers move up to sixth overall, an hour and 11 minutes behind the leaders.

Loeb, who is hot on the heels of Peterhansel and could still easily win his first ever Dakar, says the stage was short but challenging.

"I think we drove quite a good stage.

"It wasn't a long stage, but it was quite complicated, with a lot of sand, dunes and navigation at the start.

"At the end, there was a lot of mud with big water splashes in faster sections, so we had to be a bit careful, but it was ok and there is no problem with the car.

"I think we drove quite a good stage and we will see how it is for the others.

"It went well and it seems that, compared to Roma, we are in front, but he's just finishing now so maybe he's in front of us. It was ok, but there's a long way to go."

Tuesday’s 8th stage rides for 892km’s between Uyuni and Salta.
