Monaco set for 2017 Laureus World Sport Awards─── MORGAN PIEK 15:03 Tue, 14 Feb 2017
The 2017 Laureus World Sport Awards takes place in Monaco this evening and the who-is-who of the world of sport will be in attendance.
From a local point of view, the attention will be on the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award, with Bloemfontein Wayde van Niekerk named in this category.
The world and Olympic 400m champion faces some stiff competition this evening and is up against the Formula 1 World Champion, Nico Rosberg, the women’s Olympic and World 10 000m record holder, Almaz Ayana, the Fijian national sevens team, and the English Premiership outfit, Leicester City.
Van Niekerk broke the 400m world record holder in Rio de Janeiro last year to win the Olympic gold.
The Laureus Sportsman of the Year nominees are Usain Bolt, Stephen Curry, Mo Farah, LeBron James, Andy Murray and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Laureus Sportswoman of the Year nominees are Simone Biles, Allyson Felix, Laura Kenny, Angelique Kerber, Katie Ledecky and Elaine Thompson.
